Case Studies - CHP Survey

Nature of Project: CHP survey resulting in identifying the requirement to develop a low energy, low carbon strategy for the hospital.

Client: NHS Trust Hospital (350 bed acute hospital)

Teamwork's Role: Teamwork were appointed by the Hospital Trust to confirm the suitability and size of a CHP proposed by its maintenance contractor. This required Teamwork to review all energy used at the hospital and to match the hospital demand profile to the proposed CHP outputs. This exercise and report identified two critical conclusions: Firstly that the proposed CHP was undersized and that the site would benefit from a larger CHP. Secondly, the energy used by the hospital was very high at 8.3 tCO2e per 100m3 and so a programme to reduce energy use was required before a CHP could be adequately sized. This process was fully endorsed by the hospital.

Form of contract: Detailed proposal document provided by Teamwork clearly stating deliverables and time scale. Appointed via the Trusts Purchase Order.

Tangible benefits: The CHP report identified potential energy cost savings of (28%) and CO2 savings of (35%).

Non Tangible Benefits: The hospital trust also recognised their interests would be better served if they addressed the root cause of excess energy consumption before embarking on a third party CHP contracts which could be quite costly if the machine were incorrectly sized. The Trust is about to appoint Teamwork to progress with identifying specific energy savings and to develop a low carbon programme for the Hospital.
